About the Listen/Space Commissions

2018 marks the fourth year of our Listen/Space Commissions!

In the summer of 2015 we began to commission, present and record new works in a remote cabin in Tollgate Canyon, Utah.  We plan to host several projects over the next few years, creating a canon of works that represent what is happening now in American experimental music.

At it’s heart, the Listen/Space Commissions are about creating new experimental works of music, and supporting the composers, performers and ensembles engaging with these pieces now and in the future.

“Experimental music should be something that, through the way it’s performed–possibly through the way it’s presented in social and concert situations– presents the possibility of change. All sorts of change. The music becomes a kind of metaphor, if you will, for social situations– it suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different. You are making a kind of model. And if you are making music, that’s basically all you can do.” – Christian Wolff

The 2018 Project– June 20-26, 2018> Several evenings of finding the line between experimental and improvised music with works by our group of composer/performers, and quartets for oboe, clarinet, vibes and bass.  June 23, 2018 HOUSE CONCERT!

The 2017 Project– June 23-28, 2017>  6 new chamber pieces, several evenings of recorded improvisations with Jessica Gaynor adding movement improvisation and Rei Hotoda conducting!  June 25, 2017 House Concert!

The 2016 Project  June 27- July 4, 2016.  We invited many of the same composers to create new works for our ensemble in residence, we are interested in watching this body of work expand, this time using smaller combinations of instruments.  Additionally we have asked several composer/performers from the ensemble to compose works for an improvising ensemble.  All told, 13 new works of music will be performed and recorded!

The 2015 Project: MUSIC FROM LISTEN/SPACE included commissioning fees for our composers, and an entire week of an ensemble-in-residence rehearsals and recording sessions at our remote cabin outside of Park City, Utah. In addition to recording, our ensemble performed a house concert premiering these new works.

Importantly, recordings of the Listen/Space Commissions will be released and books of scores on Frog Peak Music.  (More info to come)
